Carysfort Reef Lighthouse located six nautical miles east of Key Largo is the oldest functioning lighthouse of its type in the United States being completed in 1852. The lighthouse is named for a 20-gun Royal Navy post ship that ran aground on the reef in 1770. As the Keys' most treacherous reef its no wonder the lighthouse is haunted and the activity dates back to the 1850s when the lighthouse’s first keeper, Captain Johnson, passed away in the building. Moans can still be heard in the evenings which are believed to be coming from Captain Johnson’s ghost.
"There is nothing paranormal in the universe except our limited understanding of nature... and what we think we know here on earth today is only a tiny drop in the vast ocean of knowledge... but in the not so distant past... people admired those things that could not be explained... and called them miracles!"
